An offbeat Ladakh trip with Versatile Adventure Holidays

Every time I visited a place I loved, I promised myself that I would bring my children there. That´s why this year, in 2026, I went to Ladakh and took Akash with me. My first trip to this Himalayan region in India was many years back, and a lot has changed since then: a lot of changes in my life as well as in India. In those days, Ladakh was a part of Jammu and Kashmir state, and today, it is a Union Territory. Interestingly, it is India´s largest and the second least populous Union Territory, and the ´least populous´ epithet attracted us a lot. So, we decided to go slightly away from the crowded areas and explore what natural delights this mountainous region has to offer.

Nestled between the Himalayas and the Karakoram Mountain ranges, Ladakh is a high-altitude arid region. Most parts of it are above 3,000 meters, and the area gets very little rain. It features deep valleys, stunning lakes, wild rivers, a high-altitude desert, magnificent Buddhist monasteries, and some of the most beautiful and rugged mountains in the world. The mountains are rocky, and you can see layers of different coloured rocks. They range from purple, reddish brown, green, gray, and gold. The sky seems endlessly blue there, and the entire region is home to some of the most fascinating and elusive wildlife in India. Add to that the warm Ladakhi hospitality, their distinct architectural style, and the intriguing indigenous cultures, and you have an unforgettable trip. A predominantly Buddhist region, the Ladakhi culture is closer to Tibet than the rest of India. In fact, many of the inhabitants are persecuted Tibetans, and the capital city of Leh has dedicated Tibetan Refugee Markets. The entire region is spectacular, and this beauty attracts tourists in hordes. In summer and autumn, the well-trodden destinations get very crowded, and one can see the ravages of overtourism. Piles of trash are left behind, traffic becomes chaotic, and prices spike. Thankfully, some parts are still left relatively less visited, and this year, we decided to explore parts of offbeat Ladakh.
