Hi! I am Svetlana, a cloud gypsy, a storyteller, and a Maverickbird. Thank you for visiting my travel food culture expat lifestyle blog. A mother, writer, entrepreneur, traveler, foodie, and animal lover, I am a Supergirl from India. An ex-flight attendant living in Cologne, Germany, I have explored more than 35 countries as a solo woman traveler. Experiencing and exploring are my passion and I love to tell stories.
Thus Maverickbird is a collection of travel, food, culture, tips, and expat lifestyle stories. Collected and strung from 15 years of personal travel experiences, these stories also help you with child-friendly travel tips and destination cost planning. In the Expat Diaries, I share some intimate snippets of my expat life in the lively city of Cologne along with some cool stuff about the city and Germany. Photography is my second creative love after writing and I enjoy gardening too. My travels have helped me capture diverse and intense moments that today I never go anywhere without my camera.

Thank you..hope you enjoy your flights with maverickbird
Did you add the ‘Flights of a flight attendant’ tag line recently? Either that or I must just be really dense, as I never knew that that was the driver behind your desire to travel. Or the reason why you’ve been able to visit so many places.
Though in my defence, when reading using the WP app or via the ‘reader’, nothing else comes up except for the post.
Lol..to make you feel better I will lie that I just added the tagline recently..Most of my travels were during my flying days.leisure(airline provided free tickets) and others happened after I started working as a researcher..But I do understand the viewing restrictions while using the WP app
In midst of mysterious tales of where did the bird MH370 landed, so nice of this bird to land on my blog. I envy you, I always envy those who travel a lot and more so who travel more than me. Your intro reflects some of mine, enjoyed it a lot. Beautiful photographs and equally enjoyable tales of travel. Looking forward to much more! Keep flying in to my blog as well!! Ciao!
Thank you for your kind words. I look forward to your blog

Hey, Hi! You wont believe – the image you have on your homepage of the monk in front of the door, I have the same image in front oh that very same door, I clicked in this jan! Crazy but a beautiful coincidence!
That’s such a lovely coincidence. Do you reckon the monk always turns up to pose in front of that door whenever he sees young women photographers ?..Such a naughty thought! January in Ladakh must have been freezing.
Well, now that you pointed it out, that might be true – though I kind of caught him in a candid moment from a distance.
And January in Ladakh was indeed freezing. I managed to catch the first fresh snowfall and roam around in it all day. Had come back from my Chadar trek 2014, on the frozen Zanskar! Was quite an experience!
Wow. Chadar Trek is on my wishlist. Lucky you. Was it awfully tough?
Well personally we can definitely do it, but it does test you as a person. It easy, but difficult in its own ways.
Here is the link to a little post I did on Chadar, and the difficulties of it, all about it, so you can have a look!
http://streettrotter.com/2014/07/19/10-vital-questions-answered-before-you-sign-up-for-chadar-trek-2015/
My advice, go for it! You will never ever regret it.
Hey thank you very much. I look forward to reading your post. Thank you. I am very much interested in doing the Chadar Trek. Very excited about it.
You have a lovely blog with wonderful photos and travels stories Maverickbird. I’ll be back for more, I’m your new follower! 🙂

Hi there
You rock; great life; great blog and bets of all, great writing.Very entertaining
You are a super girl with a super blog
Hope you will check out our story; we are retiring early and moving to SE Asia in the spring; we hope to get to India soon; our very white friend from the blue collar northeast part of the USA just got married to an Indian and did a traditional weeding there. We wanted to attend but with one income and and overseas move a few months away it wasn’t practical.
Our story is at http://www.experimentalexpats.com
Regards
Rob and Diane
Hello Rob and Diane
Thank you for liking my blog. I was going through Experimentalexpats in the morning and I loved your Ecuador and Borneo adventures. Best of luck with your SE Asia move and be my guest whenever you visit India. It’s a whole new (different) world out here.
Regards
Svetlana
Great. Thanks for thr invite. India looks incredible but we always feel like it would be better if we met someone while visiting to help us navigate the chaos
You are absolutely right on the chaos (associated scams, cultural differences etc). Knowing somebody would make a world of a difference as they can peel away the layer and help you understand the fine nuances existing amidst all the confusion, and seemingly crazy stuff. It’s my country, and I love it, but it sure can get on your nerves. Try reading Shantaram before visiting. It’s entertaining, gritty and mostly fictional, but does give you an idea of what to expect (a glimpse at least).
Thanks for the honest reply. Still looking forward to going some day. Perhaps i will wait until you have some free time to help us naviagte. No preasure of course. Lol
You are welcome Rodi. Please do let me know how exactly I can help you with your trip and I will try to make sure that you enjoy the bamboozling craziness of my country.
Awrsome. Thanks so much
You are welcome.
That is a very cute kid. Thanks for the like maverick 🙂
Been to south india?
Thank you. Yes I like South India.
Harsh at times ,but sunny….. thundering clouds, raging storms but then, a cool drizzle … Life is beautiful 🙂 Stay blessed Svetlana 🙂
Thank you Kokila. Life is puzzling and beautiful, thanks to all my friends and their kindness.
Warm wishes,
Svetlana
Your blog is one of the best and highest quality , story Thank you for sharing with us this beautiful story!

wonderful!!
Thank you.
Just 1 question: What do you do for earning your livelihood that helps afford such great outings?
Must say I am jealous to the core with the kind of expeditions you have made in such small lifetime. Actually its a compliment for you. I’m sure this is what Nirvana means in real sense. Hope I can someday replicate this in my life too. Keep travelling, keep smiling.
Ha Ha..Vatsal. I teach, write, lecture, volunteer, work as locale hunter for many media companies etc. And yes I have worked in airlines for more than 10 years..Thank you and safe Nirvana travels to you too.
Congratulations on the blog and greetings from Spain
Thank you very much. A warm Namaste from India.
Svetlana, love your posts and snaps, get to see the beautiful places through your blog; planning to go globetrotting sometime in future or in next life 😉 Happy traveling and keep smiling.
Thank you very much Rekha. Happy and safe travels to you.
Hey Svetlana,
I’ve been feasting on your posts since I discovered them through indiblogger. I have nominated your blog for “Very Inspiring Blogger Award”. I know that you might have received this multiple times now, but I had to nominate you as I have very small sphere of bloggers and your’s one truely stands out. You can read more about it on my blog post http://www.yayawar.com/ahoy-nominated-inspiring-blogger-award/
Keep up the inspiring work 🙂
Yayawar
Thank you very much for your kind words and encouragement. The nomination means a lot to me. Happy holidays.
Hey Svetlana, Compliments of the season! How is your book coming along? Sorry to be nosy, but I am intrigued about your book. What is your it about?
Regards
Thank you. Warm season’s greetings to you too. The book is sort of a journal, the good, bad and ugly of solo travel, bits of aviation glitz and glamour and what’s beyond it, life on the move, witnessing India during the 80’s etc.. The story starts in Bangladesh pre Independence..rather undivided Bengal and unravels from there..And at present its at stand still. Having a major time crunch to finish it.
Sounds interesting and intense…can’t wait to get my hands on a copy. By undivided bengal, do you mean pre-partion(1947) or the first partition of bengal(1905)? Can imagine a time crunch. I do hope that you manage to squeeze some time. Wish you the best!
p.s – you have an eager reader,no pressure 😉
Thank you very much. By undivided Bengal I had meant pre slicing off Bangladesh from India.

Hi Svetlana, Can you suggest me a good place in Wayanad or Pondicherry or any other place (within 600km) for me to travel this coming week from Bengaluru.
Hi. Thank you for your message. I would suggest that you base yourself out of Bangalore and explore the surroundings like Gingee, the lagoons etc. Or maybe you could drive towards Hyderabad and explore Ahobilam, Nalla Malla Forest, Gandikota etc. You can check out Ahobilam on this post http://wanderingjatin.com/2015/01/06/ahobilam-1/ Hope the suggestions help. Have a lovely weekend.
Thank you, will check it out

Friendly neighbourhood geotraveller! Heigh-ho!! 🙂
We met at the TOI Kolkata Bloggers Bloggers Meet thingy. I must say, apart from a way with words, you have a very good eye for photography, especially your use of depth of focus and your colour palettes. Wonderful and very pleasing to the rods and cones. Thank you for being Maverickbird, and for talking to me at the Bloggers Bloggers Meet yesterday. 🙂
Wow. Thank you for your kind words and deeply apologize my late reply. I had flown back home to Germany that night and had not been keeping well since then. It was a pleasure to meet you at TOI Bloggers Meet and hopefully next time, the interaction will be longer and more interesting like Blogger’s debate that we all were discussing about. Please do consider writing in Bengali (with English fonts) so that probashi non Bengali Kolkata lovers can relive our beloved city through your words. Ghoti Bati is tempting enough and I can hear the call of the hawkers and mini bus conductors. Take care and please keep in touch. The pleasure of meeting was all mine.
Oh dear, I do hope you are better now. I will indeed hound Alexander–I have decided I will not rest until my name for Anirban Saha is ubiquitous–for the Bloggers’ Adda. As for the writing in the Roman script is concerned, absolutely! In fact, I also intend to try and translate them in English as much as possible. Thank you so much for suggesting this, and thanks also for the kind words about Ghotibaatea. Here’s to our next meeting! 🙂
I have nominated you for Infinity Dreams Award jackie http://lifeseasiamagazine.com/2016/01/19/infinity-dreams-award/
