Eating Where The Locals Eat! Authentic Ho Chi Minh Street Food Tour!

Ho Chi Minh is a city where every meal is an adventure, balancing warming and cooling ingredients with fresh herbs, heavier meats, and lighter rice-based carbs. Here’s my journey exploring some of Saigon’s most delightful street foods together with Ho Chi Minh city tour.

1. Bo Ne (Sizzling Steak and Eggs)

  • Location: Bo Ne Co Ba Ngon
  • Address: 157 Hoang Sa Street, Tan Dinh Ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh

My adventure began with Bò Né, a breakfast dish of sizzling steak and eggs served on a hot cast-iron pan. The rich flavors from the marinated steak, buttery eggs, and fresh baguette were a perfect start. The sizzling sound and aroma were delightful, and the combination of oyster sauce, soy sauce, and fish sauce added a distinct Vietnamese flavor. I savoured every bite, appreciating the harmony of the tender beef, creamy eggs, and the slight crunch of the fresh baguette. Adding pickled vegetables provided a refreshing contrast, making the dish feel balanced and complete.

2. Bot Chien (Fried Rice Flour Cakes)

  • Location: Bot Chien Mr. Thai
  • Address: 184/6 Ly Chinh Thang, Ward 9, District 3, Ho Chi Minh

Next was bột chiên, a greasy but incredibly tasty snack. The crispy rice flour cakes fried with eggs and green onions reminded me of chai tow kueh from Singapore but with a unique twist. The sweet rice vinegar and soy sauce dip, along with the pickled young papaya, provided a refreshing contrast. The texture of the crispy rice cakes combined with the softness of the eggs was intriguing, and the flavors were a delightful mix of savory and sweet. Each bite was a little crunchy, a little soft, and a lot flavorful.

3. Bun Bo Hue (Spicy Beef Noodle Soup)

  • Location: Bun Bo Mrs. Như
  • Address: 274/29 Vo Van Tan, Ward 5, District 3, Ho Chi Minh

Trying Bun Bo Hue was a revelation. The spicy, citrusy broth made with lemongrass and chili was a new flavor experience. The thick cuts of meat and the vibrant orange colour from paprika or annatto oil made it a hearty and satisfying meal. The complexity of the fermented shrimp paste added a unique depth to the soup. I was initially taken aback by the intensity of the flavors but soon found myself unable to stop sipping the broth. The tender slices of beef and the occasional crunch of fresh herbs made every spoonful a delight.

4. Banh Cuon (Steamed Rice Rolls)

  • Location: Banh Cuon Y Thien
  • Address: 274 Ba Hat, Ward 9, District 10, Ho Chi Minh

Steamed rice rolls filled with ground pork and mushrooms were light yet filling. The delicate rolls and the sweet and savory dipping sauce were a harmonious blend of textures and flavors. The thin, almost transparent rice rolls were a testament to the skill involved in making them. Watching the vendor expertly create these delicate rolls was an experience in itself, and tasting them was even better. The combination of the soft rice rolls with the savory filling and the sweet dipping sauce was simple yet extraordinarily satisfying.

5. Bun Mam (Fermented Fish Noodle Soup)

  • Location: Bun Mam Phuong
  • Address: Alley 251 Nguyen Thien Thuat, Ward 1, District 3, Ho Chi Minh

Despite initial skepticism, bun mam became a favorite. The fermented fish broth, seafood, and pork belly created a rich, sweet, and savory balance. The thick rice noodles added to the hearty feel of the soup. The initial strong flavor of the broth gave way to a delightful taste that was both satisfying and unique. The robust flavours were complemented by the fresh herbs and vegetables, and I found myself appreciating the complexity of this dish more with each bite.

6. Bo Nuong La Lot (Grilled Beef in Wild Betel Leaves)

  • Location: Bo La Lot Mr. Kha
  • Address: 86/49 Ong Ich Khiem, Ward 5, District 11, Ho Chi Minh

Grilled beef wrapped in wild betel leaves was a fragrant and flavorful dish. The marinated beef combined with the aroma of the betel leaves made each bite enjoyable. The roasted peanuts added a delightful crunch to the meal. The slightly charred betel leaves imparted a smoky flavor that paired beautifully with the tender, juicy beef. The addition of fresh herbs and a tangy dipping sauce completed this delightful culinary experience.

  • Location: Bun Thit Nuong Kieu Bao
  • Address: 339/12 To Hien Thanh Street, Ward 12, District 10, Ho Chi Minh

Rice vermicelli noodles, grilled pork, crispy spring rolls, and fresh herbs were a textural delight. The sweet fish sauce seeped into every bite, making it a perfect lunch option. The combination of smoky pork and crispy spring rolls was incredibly satisfying. Each mouthful was a blend of different textures and flavors – the crunch of the spring rolls, the softness of the noodles, and the fresh herbs made this dish a refreshing and satisfying meal.

8. Com Tam (Broken Rice with Various Toppings)

  • Location: Com Tam Ba Ghien
  • Address: 84 Dang Van Ngu Street, Ward 10, Phu Nhuan District, Ho Chi Minh

Broken rice was a comforting and hearty meal. The variety of meats and vegetables, particularly the rich braised catfish, complemented the rice perfectly. Each meal was different and exciting, showcasing the diversity of Vietnamese cuisine. I particularly enjoyed the contrast between the fluffy broken rice and the rich, flavourful meat dishes. The addition of fresh vegetables and herbs made each bite a delightful mix of textures and flavours.

9. Xoi Man (Savoury Sticky Rice)

  • Location: Xoi Ga 243
  • Address: 243 Ton Dan, Ward 15, District 4, Ho Chi Minh

Savoury sticky rice topped with Vietnamese cold cuts and pickled vegetables was an unexpected delight. The savoury rice and the familiar flavours of bánh mì ingredients in different forms made it a fun and satisfying meal. The sticky rice had a wonderful chewy texture, and the combination of savoury toppings and fresh herbs created a deliciously balanced dish.

10. Egg Coffee
